Greys are a result of a Fallen Angel's project to try and create a sentient being. It failed, and so the Grey's are playing with genetics in hopes of changing themselves to be worthy enough to be seeded a soul as special as ours.

This article about Allister Crowley and his rituals which brought an entity into this plane of existence in 1918, via a portal. he called this being Lam. in today's occult circles, Lam is considered to be a class of entities, rather than a specific being. The resemblence to the grey aliens is apparent.
